Should you consider a Shagbark Hickory
Shagbark Hickorys (Carya ovata) gets its name from the distinctive bark that seems to break up into strips that slightly curl at the ends, although the shagginess only applies to mature trees. Bark on young trees is smooth. Our area is at the extreme western limit of its range, so Shagbarks are few and far between. Normally a slow growing tree, nurseries have increased growth rates by grafting upper portions onto roots of faster growing species.
