Come to your census

Come to your census

Did you ever wonder why we do not have the 1890 census? The census was taken and written by hand but by then the computer was invented. Is that a surprise to you? It was to me. This computer was very large! It was bigger than a large room. The information was entered into the computer and the computer then spit out large cards punched with holes that another computer could read. These cards were then stored in a federal building in the basement. In 1921 there was a fire in the building. The cards didn’t burn as the fire was on the first floor, but the firemen were spraying water and the water leaked into the basement destroying the cards. I really wish that the census papers had been saved by the counties!
