Gem Elmore addresses the Texas State Historical Association

Sophomore Honors Scholar, Gem Elmore, recently became the third NTCC student in history to give an invited address to the annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). Professorial judges of the TSHA’s collegiate auxiliary, The Walter Webb Society, selected Elmore’s work to represent the best of essays in 2020 in the state among freshman and sophomore college/university students. Elmore’s essay is on the “Integration of Northeast Texas Churches.”

Beginning last fall, every public-school student in Italy now spends a week’s worth of learning (33 hours per year) about climate change. In the United States, there’s much less emphasis. Oklahoma, for example, only lists humans as having possible responsibility. Texas “misrepresents anthropogenic climate change as scientifically controversial,” which I think means school districts and even teachers are free to decide how much students learn (or don’t) about climate change. While OK & TX seem to languish, surrounding states (AR, LA, NM, and KS) are moving forward in educating students

The Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network took in approximately 3.2 million reports in 2019 with consumer losses estimated at over $1.7 billion. The 2020 report will be published in the spring of 2021.
