Alley of Lights

The City of Pittsburg has requested from The City of Pittsburg Community Development Office that the alley between Quitman and Church St. is closed to house the Alley of Lights this christmas. The Alley of Lights will go from Nov. 2, at 8am to Jan. 4, at 5pm. This event will be family friendly and will meet all the guidelines of COVID-19. As guests walk around and enjoy the sights there will also be opportunities to pick up christmas gifts at local shops.

As the director of Camp County Cares and God’s Closet, Alethea Smerdon has dedicated her life to helping others. As a little girl, she dreamed of feeding the hungry and helping orphans. After 20 years in the US Navy, Smerdon came home to do just that. Her first project was a small food pantry tucked away in a closet at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Over time, this pantry grew to take over two hallways inside the church.

Belva Anne Bennett was born on October 24, 1830 to Lewis and Hannah Bennett, simple farmers in Royalton, New York. Belva attended public school and through hard work and good grades, at fourteen years old, was hired to teach in a rural school for $7 a week. At 18 years old, she married Uriah McNall, a young local farmer. Two years later they were blessed with a baby girl they named Lura. Their lives changed in 1853 when Uriah died of consumption (tuberculosis), leaving her and 3-year-old Lura to fend for themselves.
