Early Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, at the Big Al’s Barefoot Bay Marina on FM 1520, a crowd gathered to help owner, Alan Pariser, dedicate the new flagpole and honor the fallen warriors. Pariser stepped up to the flag, saluted and said, “Today we gather to memorialize our veterans who we have lost, who have never made it back home” and then read a piece by the great Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh, Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
On a very sunny Monday, May 25, 2026, at 12:00 pm, the American Legion Post 422, on Elm Street in Pittsburg, hosted this year’s annual Memorial Day service because everyone anticipated rain. As Commander Harrison said at the beginning of his welcome, “This shows why we know God has a sense of humor”. Ruby Estrada, a graduating senior from Pittsburg High School, was introduced during the event as the recipient of this year’s $500 scholarship provided by the American Legion Post. The memorial service followed military protocol including tolling fallen soldiers names and honoring the Fallen Soldier table. The guest speaker was the VFW Post 5398 Post Commander Roman Elbe, whose well-received comments spoke about why the fallen soldiers were honored after their deaths. There were almost 200 people at the event, including Mayor Abernathy. The memorial service ended with Taps and Piper Bryan Robinson playing “Amazing Grace”.
