Should you consider a Shagbark Hickory

Shagbark Hickorys (Carya ovata) gets its name from the distinctive bark that seems to break up into strips that slightly curl at the ends, although the shagginess only applies to mature trees. Bark on young trees is smooth. Our area is at the extreme western limit of its range, so Shagbarks are few and far between. Normally a slow growing tree, nurseries have increased growth rates by grafting upper portions onto roots of faster growing species.

Accustomed to spending Christmas Day packed with beloved family, or close friends? Or a mixture of both, in a free-for-all party of fun and food? Now it is true, most of us do have a person who is a – um – least favorite relative, but we tolerate even them on that special holiday for a few hours. We simply choose to avoid them as much as possible and concentrate on making the day warm and bright for everyone in the house.

Christmas this year just hasn’t been the same. I have lived in Edna, Texas for over 17 years. And every year, for the last 17 years, our church has held its annual Redeemer Lutheran Church Christmas dinner in December. It is our church’s biggest fellowship event of the year. This year, it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
