Center Point, in Camp County, was originally settled by emancipated slaves in 1865 after the Civil War. The community saw that it was essential to create a school for their children to attend. In 1889, G.W. Goulsby, built a one-room school for the student to learn in. By 1916 the school had expanded to five rooms total. This photo was taken after the expansion and showcased the crowned Center Point Queen and her court. According to Texas Escapes, by 1935 Center Point was regarded as one of Camp County’s better schools until 1955 where the school merged with Pittsburg ISD due to a dwindling population.
