Harry David Mathis

Harry David Mathis was born on Sept 18, 1927 to Dr. and Mrs. Edgar G. Mathis, the youngest of their five children. He grew up in Corpus Christi and went on to earn his degree at the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He served his country in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. Dad met and married Ann Spencer in 1954 and they had 55 wonderful years together until Mother’s passing in 2009. Harry had a successful career in the oilfield service industry in various management positions. After Ann and Harry put their three children through college he retired to Pittsburg, Texas at age 58 to enjoy life with his family and friends. His many interests included saltwater fishing, golf, college football, duplicate bridge, travel, gardening, mountain trout fishing, horse racing and cruises. Dad was a fine Christian gentleman, a life long Protestant church member and served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. Dad was a kind and considerate man who always had the time to help someone out. Harry is survived by his children, David Spencer Mathis and Nancy Mathis Jewett and her husband Jeff; his loving companion of the past 12 years, Betty Whatley Whiteside; his step-grandchildren and their families; also many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Harry is preceded in death by his wife Ann and his son Thomas; also his parents, brothers and sisters, and in-laws.
