Though often seen as a nuisance, mushrooms are a necessary part of good soil structure. Their function is the breakdown of decaying plants, recycling nutrients for a healthy ecosystem. The mushroom is in reality the fruiting part of a network of mycelium (fungi roots) spread throughout the soil. These mycelium are nearly waterproof, making it difficult to eradicate mushrooms from a pasture, yard, or garden.
