Sheriff John Cortelyou updated the Commissioners Court on March 6 about the status of the jail’s construction. Overall, everything is right on schedule, but the major issue that was addressed was the architect’s “basic” oversight. The oversight in question is the new jail cells have no cameras in them, which is a requirement that must be met. Camp County Judge AJ Mason states, “DRG Architects has been a disappointment” and, “We expect more [because] they get paid very well to do this and they have not tended to the best interest of Camp County.” Along with this oversight, there is $7,000 worth of electrical work that was not in the plans, and $90,000 worth of overspeculation from the architect. “The problem is their oversight costs money… That’s the bottom line,” says Cortelyou.
