In 2012, NASA astronaut Tom Stafford visited with Pittsburg high school students, and on March 18, he passed away at age 93 after battling a long illness. Many still remember this visit as a momentous occasion in Pittsburg history.
As reported in the Pittsburg Gazette on Sept. 7, 2023, Gordon Allen of Avon, IN had his commemorative pistol stolen in October 1991. In 2005, Attorney Paul Mayben of Pittsburg purchased said gun after it appeared in Burns Pawn Shop in Pittsburg, TX. In January 2023, Indiana police ran the gun’s numbers again and discovered Mayben had purchased the stolen pistol.
