The history of Pittsburg is a long and varied story. The annual Pioneer Days Festival brightening the horizon gives an opportunity to highlight some of these stories that have made Pittsburg and the surrounding community what it has become.
With school starting for children, I started thinking about how Jesus taught the disciples. He was their school teacher. He was their guide. He was the way. Truth. And life. He was their Savior.
Over the last week, much has been made of President Biden’s new plan to forgive student loans of up to $20,000 for those who qualify.
Every new generation born in Pittsburg asks the question sooner or later, “Why that bend in Main Street?” It is said that way back in the 1860’s when roads were laid without the use of compasses and chains, a tree was cut down where the street now turns, and rather than remove the tree, pedestrians and vehicles went around it until the passageway became a well-defined road. Business houses were then built along the road, as can be seen on this Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from 1885.
Many local businesses, churches, and individuals sponsored, donated, and helped distribute school supplies for Camp County kids on August 6. This school supply give out was held at the beautiful Bleu Hen Crossing Event Center, 236 Rusk St, in Pittsburg.
