Doyle and Karen Thomas celebrated the opening of their 23rd Whataburger store on September 12. The largest franchise in the Whataburger brand, DKT Investments (so named for the letters in the couple’s name), started roughly 30 years ago when Doyle began his own franchise. But his career with Whatabuger began at age 18 when he needed a part-time job while attending college.
Rebecca Wells of TXDOT noted that it is not often that a brand new road is opened for use, but State Loop 255 was given that honor on September 15 when a ribbon was cut, officially opening the road for traffic. This project, begun in March 2021, was completed this September after several delays and difficulties involving construction materials and a “lot of hard work.” SL 255 connects US 271 and FM 1520 in the northern part of the county, and is 2.8 miles long with two 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot paved shoulders. Most of the route is entirely new, except for a section on County Road 2116 between US 271 and County Road 2110. Posted speed on SL 255 is 50 miles per hour.
