All four teams of Pittsburg Junior High basketball traveled to Gilmer on Jan. 21. Team 7B lost (score unavailable), 7A lost 26-29 with Mckynzie Gonzalez scoring 18 points, Era Osornio scoring 6 points and Sophie Smith scoring points. Team 8A lost 22-37with Bethany Thompson scoring 11 points, Emie Castaneda scoring 6 points, while Sunny Lankford and Odette Burgos each scored 2 points. “Even though they haven’t played a game since before Christmas break, they still played their hearts out. The Pittsburg Pirates score 4-1 at tounament

The Pittsburg Pirates went 4-1 at the Tatum invitational tournament this weekend. They opened up the tournament with a 7 to 0 win against the host team Tatum. Giovanny Rojas lead the Pirates in scoring with three goals. Adair Verde and Yedhiael Ramirez had two goals each. Mauricio Galvan lead the team in assists with three. The player of the game went to Mauricio Galvan. Mauricio is a very versatile player and currently has eight assists on the season. In the second game, the Pirates could not find the back of the net and gave up a late free-kick that allowed Bullard to get the 1-0 win. The Player of that game went to Daniel Guerrero. Daniel lead the defense against a great Bullard team. On the second day of the tournament, the Pirates took on Sabine and got the 6-3 win. Adair Verde had five goals. Giovanny Rojas lead the team in assists with 5 and also scored a goal. The Pirates went up early 6-1. Allowing other players an opportunity to get a lot of playing time. The player of the game went to Adair Verde. The second game of the day was against Spring Hill and the Pirates got the 3-0 win. Victor Benites, Adair Verde, and Yedhiael Ramirez all scored one goal each. Adrian Vega had his first varsity start at goalie and kept a clean sheet giving up 0 goals to the Panthers. The player of the game went to Victor Benites. Victor flies around the whole field and never stops. His agility and quickness give the other teams trouble. The fifth and final game was against Mineola and the Pirates won 5-1. Giovanny Rojas lead the Pirates with 3 goals and Adair Verde had 2. The player of the game went to Omar Garza for his lockdown defense. Two Pirates were awarded to the all-tournament team. Giovanny Rojas and Daniel Guerrero. Giovanny Rojas had seven goals and six assists throughout the tournament. Daniel Guerrero is a vocal captain and leader on the back end of our defense. The Pittsburg Pirates improved to 8-1 on the season. They are currently leading all of 4A with the most goals scored, with 45 goals on the season. Giovanny Rojas is also leading all of 4A in goals 19, assists nine, and total points 47. The Pirates next match will be at home this coming Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. against the Henderson Lions.

Pittsburg’s 13U Landon Graham overcomes the ‘nerves’ at Globe Life Field

With 14 outs, 15 home runs and a tie for first, Landon Graham put himself a top with a home run off the wall at Globe Life Field. The right-handed slugger blasted his 16th home run to take sole possession of first in the 13U preliminary round at the Power Showcase Home Run Derby.
