Lady Pirates win, Pirates lose

The Lady Pirates won their District game with the North Lamar Lady Panthers 53 to 33. The game was extremely fast paced and both teams used a press defense at times and a zone defense. The shooting on both teams was a bit off and on but there were plenty of three pointers on both sides.

However, as the game entered the fourth quarter I began to see the Lady Panthers begin to tire at a much faster rate than the Lady Pirates, many of who were playing at high level.

The Lady Pirates were in control of the game from the start even though the N. Lamar ran a press against them in the first quarter, the Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Panthers 3 to 1.

Tyler Green was high point scorer with 21 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and several baskets with her specialty the fast break lay-up. Meme Burns scored 12 points on layups and her specialty of putting up rebound for a score.

McKenna Wood scored eight points shooting two 3-pointers back to back in the third, while working the ball in for the others to score. Red Swain hit a three pointer and an impossible shot from the corner for 2, then hit two penalty shots for seven points.

Natalie Styles scored four points on two offensive rebounds, as she and Kianna Blackwell did their defensive rebound magic. Blackwell scored one point on a free throw in the fourth to round out the game.

The Pirates played immediately after the Lady Pirates, also against North Lamar. The game was a heart breaker as time just ran out on the Pirates. The Pirates lost possession at a critical moment and the Panthers got a foul shot that put the game out of reach as the clock ran out. Pirates lost 52 to 49. There were no stats available at press time.
