Reverend John Michael Woods, who resided in Mt. Vernon, Texas, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at the age of 79.

Father Michael was born to parents John Wesley and Helen K. Woods on July 25, 1942 in Atlanta, Texas. He grew up in Texarkana, Arkansas and graduated Arkansas High School. He obtained degrees from University of Arkansas, and Henderson State University. In 1970, he married his wife of 50 years, Dianna McKinley Woods. Following graduation from Nashotah House Seminary in Nashotah, Wisconsin in 1975, he served as priest in Episcopal churches in the East Texas area including All Saints Church in Atlanta, Texas, St William Laud in Pittsburg, Texas, St. James Episcopal Church in Texarkana, Texas and others.

Father Michael enjoyed life on the lake where he could sail on his sailboat, walk his dog in the park, and swim at the gym. In addition, Father Michael loved having his family for a visit, dinner, and time with his grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his wife, Dianna Woods; son, Christopher and wife Rebecca Woods, grandson Logan Parker and granddaughters Shelby and McKinley of Atlanta, Texas; son Jonathan and wife Kelli Woods, grandsons Mason and Wesley of Frisco, Texas and his sister Jane Woods Chischilly and nephew Jason of Texarkana, Texas. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Father Michael’s life will be held October 11, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Texarkana, Texas. Family and friends are invited to attend the Requiem Mass. The family is grateful for the condolences; memorial donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or any charity of your choice.
