Sidney Lee Serres

An Amazing Life Well Lived

Sid Serres was born in Houston, Texas on September 15, 1933, the 12th of 16 children born to Joseph Bernard Serres and Alexina Cora Moore Serres. He attended both Catholic and public schools in the Heights and later acquired several credit hours at the University of Houston. At the age of 16, he worked for Southwestern Drug Corporation and volunteered for the draft two weeks after his 17th birthday.

Sid Serres joined the United States Army on October 3, 1950, and served in the 40th Infantry Division, 160th Regimental Combat Team, Company G, Second Battalion. He served in active combat in Korea achieving the rank of corporal, and was honorably discharged on September 12, 1952, three days before his 19th birthday.

Afterwards, he worked for Hughes Tool Company with several of his brothers for about three years.

In March of 1954, he met Martha McCullar when he went to buy a watch at Gordon’s Jewelers on 19th Street. Martha was a senior in high school working her Saturday job at Gordon’s and sold him the watch. The rest is history! Their first date was her senior prom and they married that same year on his 21st birthday.

Sid quit his job at Hughes Tool to join the Houston Police Department. He graduated from the police academy on August 20, 1956, Class 14. (Recently, HPD graduated the 286th class.) He became a criminal investigator after his 2nd year on the force and became a sergeant on July 31, 1965. He worked mainly in radio patrol and retired from HPD after 32 years of service.

Two days after he retired from HPD, he joined the Harris County Sheriff ’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff working in internal affairs and the jail.

He retired again on March 31, 1999. On January 29, 2002, Sid began working as a Special Deputy US Marshal Court Security Officer for six and a half years and retired again on July 18, 2008. Since retiring the last time, he has enjoyed teaching men’s Sunday school at Memorial Baptist Church, vacationing with his wife and children, playing 42 dominoes with grandchildren, reading his Bible and Christian books, listening to sermons by Charles Stanley, taking drives with his family, and watching reruns of Perry Mason and Adam-12.

In June of last year, Sid was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and God graciously gave his family another year with him. Sid went to Heaven to be with the Lord he loved on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, where he will spend eternity. Most importantly, Sid accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior on November 22, 1965, at a Billy Graham Crusade. He was ordained a deacon at Northwoods Baptist Church on September 13, 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha Serres; his children, Sheryl Serres, Ronald Serres and wife Susan Anne, Vicky Sinclair and husband Randy, and Rebecca Huggins and husband Alan; his grandchildren, Jennifer Swanson and husband Michael, Kimberly Turany and husband Shane, Stephen Sinclair and wife Christiana, Michelle Myers and husband Jeffery, and Timothy Huggins; his great-grandchildren, Connor Swanson and his expected new baby brother Swanson due in December, Jesse DeLobel, Abigail Turany, Caleb Sinclair, Anna Sinclair, Cannon Goodman, Jaxon Goodman, Madison Goodman, Gatlon Goodman, Bryson Myers and Brynleigh Myers; and his step great-grandchildren, Gavyn Myers, Braxtyn Myers, Brody Myers and Roehyn Myers.
