James Gray McWhorter

James Gray McWhorter of Pittsburg, Texas died at his home on Sunday, June 25, 2023. He was born on July 30, 1935 in Winnsboro, Texas to the late Merkil David and Mamye McWhorter. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. He graduated from Baylor University and went to work for General American Oil Company if Texas in Dallas as a geologist. He met his wife Ann McMillen in September of 1960 at General American Oil Company and they were later married on December 10, 1960. On June 1, 1964 he went to work for A.H. Robins Pharmaceuticals as a medical representative and in 1988, A.H. Robins merged with Wyeth. In 1999 he retired with thirty five years of service.

Gray was active in his church having served as chairman of the staff parish. He served as chairman of the Texas Rangers Association Foundation from 2001 – 2003. He also served as chairman of the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum, vice president of the Camp County Emergency Medical Services, served Whatley Center Advisory Board at the Northeast Texas Community College. In 1988 he received the A.H. Robbins Regional President’s Award and later in 1995 was selected as the Texas Pharmacy Association Outstanding Representative of the year.

He is a member of the Masonic Lodge of Winnsboro and the Frank Sexton Masonic Lodge in Pittsburg, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite, York Rite, and a member of the Hella Shrine Temple of Dallas. On October 27, 2007 he received the Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, and in 2019 received the Golden Trowel award in the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Ann McWhorter of Pittsburg and daughter and son-in-law Renee and John Kendrick of Diana, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Johns, Paul Mayben, Randy Lange, Harold Kennington, Mike Derrick, and Wayne Kimbell. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Carpenter, Hulen Moore, Brantley Foster, Ralph Wadsworth, John Vance, and David Byrnes.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg with burial to follow at Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro, Texas. Reverend Ricky Ricks will officiate the service. The family will receive friends at the Methodist church beginning at 1 p.m. prior to the service.
