Words of

According to dictionary.com, the word affirmation means “the assertion that something exists or is true; or something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.”

Looking at the world around us, I think we all could use more positive affirmation.

It seems our society has accepted bringing people down as the norm. It seems everyone expects to knock people down. As a society, we take every opportunity to break down any and every person who may think, act, or look differently from ourselves. It is as if we see “difference” as wrong.

Recently on Facebook there was a post that asked those reading it to leave one positive word in the comments for the person who posted it. The only stipulation was that the word left must begin with the first letter of the commenter’s name. The post was not asking for attributes for the original poster, but simply positive words of affirmation for them to carry through life. Wow! That is deep to me.

How much easier is it to go through rough days when we are thinking positive thoughts? In a world full of negativity, it makes things a little brighter when you have all these words of positivity floating in your head, due to something as simple as a Facebook post.

I know that life is not as simple as Facebook. I know that there are things that will come into our daily routines that are neither easy nor enjoyable. Sometimes, we are going to have bad days, or even weeks. But, when your life is filled with small bits of positivity, you can draw from those in the darkest of times.

How much friendlier would the world be if we spent more time trying to build others up, instead of tearing them down for our own edification? How much better would our own lives be if they were filled with positive affirmations from others?

Better yet, how much better would our days be if we went out of our way to share a positive affirmation with others?

This is not a simple fix, and I get that. It would be totally crazy to take sticky notes and post them around town with words of affirmation for others to see. But we can do that at home. Find ways to affirm our children, spouses, and those we encounter. You just might find that they are not the only ones lifted in the process. You might find affirmation for yourself, as well.
