• Sonny Smith, owner of Smith Furniture, opens fire on a man who smashes the business’s plate glass window. The man was so frightened he ran straight to the sheriff ’s office.

• Doris Richardson is promoted to officer supervisor of Pittsburg’s Southwestern Electric Power Company office.

60 YEARS AGO

• Yank Howell elected president of Princedale Country Club.

• Motorists were warned on blocking traffic lanes to fires.

• Johnny Morris wins golf title.

80 YEARS AGO

• A national defense council is organized for Camp County.

• Needed labor for farms was provided by the WPA.

95 YEARS AGO

• A mass meeting was held to discuss law enforcement.

• A car of cabbage was shipped from Pittsburg. The cabbage brought $20 a ton to the growers.

110 YEARS AGO

• A young boy was arrested for stealing a bridle from a local store.

• Judge C.G Engledow resigns as cashier of First State Bank.

• Hood Barnwell loses a barn to a fire.

130 YEARS AGO

• Crops are in good condition and are said to be most promising.

• The largest funeral procession of the season was seen last Monday on the occasion of the burial of Gad Ellen, a preacher.

• Tuesday morning it had been reported on the streets that a cougar had been seen about a mile and a half south of town.

30 YEARS AGO: Doris Acker Richardson was a member of the PHS Class of ‘65 and now resides in Quitman.

60 YEARS AGO: Johnny Morris was co-valedictorian of the PHS Class of ‘63. He served as a judge in Gainsville in recent years.
