15 YEARS AGO
• Hillary Green was crowned Miss PHS last Thursday night at the high school auditorium. She signed to the song “Spoken For.” Hillary is the daughter of James Green and Melanie Finn.
• The Pittsburg High School valedictorian for the class of 2006 is Melissa Harwell. Lauren Skinner is the salutatorian.
• Rotary scholarships were awarded to several students from the Pittsburg Rotary Club. Recipients included Adam Goldsmith, Jessica Waldrep, Megan Morrow, Lauren Skinner, Amanda Mitcham, Megan Knight, Shastazia White, Katie Shurbet, Vanessa Harris, Carlos Orsornio, Sarah Beth Gooding and Kelly Lindley. Each student will receive $1,000 scholarship.
• The DECA chapter members return from the International Career Development Conference In Dallas. There were over 13,000 students at the conference competing in various events. Bianca Hernandez and Jesseka McCain presented the Civic Consciousness Project while Kelly Lindley and Megan Morrow presented the Creative Marketing Project. Lauren Skinner and Meagan Knight also presented the Learn and Earn Project.
• A science fair was held on the campus of the Pittsburg Elementary School. Winners were: Kason Newman, Kristopher Dugosh, and Josh Roper. Kason won first place with his catapult study. Kristopher placed second with earthquake, and Josh won third with density. The projects were judged by science teachers from the intermediate school.

• First Lady Laura Bush is in town to help celebrate Pittsburg’s 10-year anniversary as a Main Street City.
• Jill Diane Stinson is valedictorian of the 1996 Pittsburg High School Class. Salutatorian is Amy Parker.
• Lady Pirate sprint relay team qualifies for State meet. Team members are Brandi Seale, Terrica Moton, Angela Bratton, and Tazandria Nelms. Moton will also compete in the 100-meter dash. Rod Luster will go to the State meet to compete in the 200- meter hurdles.
• 35 YEARS AGO
• Rhonda Davis is named rodeo queen.
• Connie Thomas is second runner-up in East Texas Miss Ebony pageant. She was also named “Miss Congeniality.”
• Top graduates at Pittsburg Middle School are Julie Henderson, Jenny Johns and Angie Peek.
• Jessie Anderson is honored as Moore’s Nursing Home’s “Employee of the Year.”
45 YEARS AGO
• School board approves plans to draw up specifications for three new tennis courts on the high school campus.
• Judge Larry McCasland presides at Texas Conservation Awards banquet.
• Distributive Education Clubs of America holds annual employer/ employee banquet.
55 YEARS AGO
• Deadline for Peach Queen entries draws near.
• Bennie Falls is honor student at Frederick Douglass High School.
65 YEARS AGO
• Ground-breaking is held at St. William Laud Episcopal Church site.
• Seventy students to graduate from high school this year.
• Jean Miller is elected prom sweetheart at the junior-senior prom.
75 YEARS AGO
• Murray Maddox arrives from China where he served with the Marines.
• Storm brings heavy losses to East Texas crops.
• W.S. Fleming is honored by the Kiwanis Club for his 51 years of educational work.

• The high school had 51 graduates.
• Burglars take $500 worth of merchandise from the store of Abernathy, Credille & Center.

• The Rev. E.P. West resigns as pastor of the Baptist church on account of throat trouble.
• Telephone poles were removed from main street.
• Pittsburg is preparing to hold a chrysanthemum show.

• Strawberries are selling for 5 cents a box.
• The Baptist ladies are planning to serve dinner at the courthouse.
• The small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ellis broke her arm when she fell from the surrey.
