Remember back 60 years ago? The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. War in Cyprus. Sean Connery in “Goldfinger.” Earthquake in Alaska. Arnold Palmer won his 4th and final Masters. Civil rights. Johnny Unitas. “Mary Poppins.” Willie Mays earned a $105,000 per season contract with the Giants. “Gilligan’s Island.” Brezhnev replaced Khrushchev. “My Fair Lady.” Nobel Peace Prize to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Nelson Mandela imprisoned. Sandy Koufax struck out 3 batters with 9 pitches. Kenya became a republic under President Kenyatta. Remember? Do you also remember Jewel Akens? He released a single (remember those?) in 1964 entitled, “The Birds and the Bees,” a song about “a thing called love.” We sing that often. We are not talking about love or the facts of human life; we’re focused on pollination in plants and the creatures that do the pollination work. That also is about “the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees.”
