Reserve deputy Phillip Allen escorted on final call after succumbing to illness
On July 2, local first responders honored the legacy of Phillip Allen, a reserve deputy for Camp County Sheriff ’s Office and volunteer firefighter, with a final escort home. Allen was a long-time servant to the community, working as a first responder for more than 40 years.
After a month-long battle, Allen sadly succumbed to COVID-19 and double pneumonia on July 2. After being escorted home by Camp and Upshur County first responders, his badge, #519, was officially retired. Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou said it was an honor to be part of the group that escorted Phillip Allen back home. “Phillip was so involved in public service in Camp County for most of his life. He had been a reserve for the sheriff ’s department for 33 years, and he served as a volunteer fireman,” Sheriff Cortelyou said. “It was the least we could do. All Camp County first responder agencies were represented in the escort, and we owe a big thank you to the Upshur County Sheriff ’s Office, the Gilmer Police Department and the Upshur County Constables’ Offices for their assistance and participation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Allen’s daughter, Rachelle Allen Seals says that for is eternally grateful for the love and support of the local first responders and community.
“Badge # 519 has officially been retired. That will forever be dad’s number… I want everyone to know just how much we love and appreciate everything you have done. All the prayers, cards, flowers, meals, calls, visits, and messages have absolutely been amazing and have helped more than you know. Sending all my love to everyone on the Sheriff ’s department, police department and fire department. Thank you all so much,” said Seals in a social media post.
Pittsburg Fire Rescue said of Allen, “It was with great honor and heavy hearts that we escorted Phillip Allen on his final call, July 2, 2021, after more than 40 years of service with Pittsburg Fire Rescue… Pittsburg Fire Rescue extends our heartfelt appreciation for the many years of service and sacrifice made by Phillip and his family. He will be deeply missed by his friends, the Department and the Citizens of the County.”
