Operation Slow Down begins Tuesday

As the summer driving season kicks into gear, the Camp County Sheriff ’s Office is urging motorists to slow down to help save lives. Last year in Texas, speed was a contributing factor in more than 163,000 roadway crashes, resulting in 1,532 deaths—34% of all traffic fatalities in the state.

Speed is the number one factor in roadway crashes in Texas, and speed increases the risk of death and serious injury when a collision occurs. Speed can also mean a costly ticket.

“To remind motorists that driving too fast can be dangerous and expensive, we are partnering with law enforcement agencies across the Lone Star State by stepping up efforts to enforce speed limits during Operation Slowdown June 7–21,” Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou said.

“While speeding and traffic crashes know no geographical limits, data confirms that Camp County has had a number of serious crashes and fatalities on Highway 271 South and Farm-to-Market Road 557,” he said. “This STEP grant limits us to two areas, and during Operation Slow Down, deputies will be working overtime to enforce traffic laws in these two areas.”

Everyone knows not to get behind the wheel after drinking but driving a few miles over the speed limit can be just as dangerous. Just like you plan ahead to get a sober ride, make sure you give yourself enough time to get to your destination or just be late. Trying to shave a few minutes off your commute isn’t worth a lifetime of regret.

The consequences of speeding include:

• Greater potential for loss of vehicle control;

• Reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment;

• Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger;

• Increased degree of crash severity leading to more disabling injuries;

• The unexpected economic and even psychological implications of a speed related crash; and

• Increased fuel consumption/cost.
