• Pittsburg Foundry, where the Ezekiel Airship was built 90 years previously, collapses and Fulton Street is closed due to falling bricks.

• Lightning ignites two oil storage tanks in Newsome. Firefighters use 3,700 gallons of water and compressed air-foam to stop the blaze.

• Amy Parker and Jill Stinson are highest-ranking eighth grade students.

40 YEARS AGO

• Margie Webb chosen as Mother of the Year at First Church of the Nazarene.

• Terence Reeves and Anthony Hiner are recipients of TSTA/NEA scholarships.

• In Camp County elections, 2,913 voters go to the polls. Runoff planned in sheriff, tax collector races.

• David Rust wins conservation essay contest.

50 YEARS AGO

• Leesburg Brick Plant sells to J.K. Prewitt.

• New lake planned on Little Cypress.

60 YEARS AGO

• Pittsburg National Bank moves into new home.

• Sharon Reitz, valedictorian, Carrol Acker, salutatorian for 1962 PHS graduates.

70 YEARS AGO

• Sheriff Weatherford resigns from office.

• 42 seniors receive diplomas from PHS.

80 YEARS AGO

• Sheriff Carpenter arrests five boys for stealing a car belonging to Albert Carpenter; the boys had escaped from Missouri prison.

• Graydon Adkins reports 100 acres under six feet of water.

90 YEARS AGO

• Forty-three graduates will receive diplomas.

• Pittsburg uses about 2,000,000 gallons of water per month. (Broken mains cost an extra 1,000,000 gallons last month.)

100 YEARS AGO

• There is a movement to pave Quitman Street as far as F.E. Prince’s residence, Mt. Pleasant Street as far as the Katy track, and Rusk Street from the library building to Dr. E.E. Bryson’s home.

110 YEARS AGO

• Joe B. Taylor is asked to go to Dallas to oversee the barbeque of meals for roughly 3,000 delegates to the Ad Men’s Association of America.

120 YEARS AGO

• Gordon Gisxon sells the Casino restaurant to Will Willis.

130 YEARS AGO

• Blizzard visits Pittsburg.

• Machinery arrives for Mr. Amos’ spoke and axe-handle factory.

The Leesburg Brick Plant was on the site currently occupied by Dyco Metals on Hwy 11.

60 YEARS AGO

Pittsburg National Bank’s new home was the current city hall. Previously the bank was in the west half of current Parker Drug building.

70 YEARS AGO

Sheriff Red Weatherford was succeeded by Colin Bell.

90 YEARS AGO

There were many more students in the county than today. The graduating class appears small. However, there were two high schools in the city, Douglass and Pittsburg. There were also numerous rural schools in the county as well.
