• Pittsburg Pirate Baseball wins Area Championship, defeating Canton 3-2.

• Pittsburg students outshine area schools in STARR tests.

• Mayor Shawn Kennington presented students of Pittsburg ISD Production Class under the direction of Jessica Jesmore with an award of appreciation for their participation in the 911 Addressing Public Service Announcement video. Students who participated are Shyanne Cooper, Anjelica Cedillo, Troy Fuller, Allyson Jackson, Kaine Alvarez, Esmeralda Sierra Suarez, Chasity Clifton, Jesse Chavez, Savannah Hayes, Brenna Cedillo and Tammy Nolasco.

• Lawrence Cleveland is the new athletic director for the Pittsburg Independent School District. In a unanimous decision, the 28-year coach received a rousing round of applause from those in attendance at the school board meeting Monday night.

• After 52 years of Pittsburg having the same mayor, D. H. Abernathy steps down and Pittsburg has a new mayor, Shawn Kennington.

• Kendall Wright traveled to Austin May 13 to represent Pittsburg from District 13AAA in the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Championship meet. Mr. Wright, a sophomore, took the trip seriously and came away with a solid performance, placing second in the Class 3A triple jump. His best mark was his first attempt, which was 47-2.

• Melissa Diaz is the top-ranking student in the eighth grade at Pittsburg Middle School with a 101.50 grade point average for the seventh and eighth grades. Lane Nickerson ranked second with a 98.90 average for the seventh and eighth grades.

• TXU Mining submitted a mine-permit application to the Railroad Commission of Texas to develop a new lignite mine in Camp County to be called the Leesburg Mine. Lignite from this mine will be used at the Monticello power plant.

• Jay and Kelly Silman announce the birth of their daughter, Kaylee Jo Silman. She was born April 27 at 10:15 a.m. at Titus Regional Medical Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 19 inches long.

25 YEARS AGO • Pirate band, under the direction of Greg Rose, wins

Sweepstakes Award for a fifth consecutive year.

• Members of the Pirate fast-pitch softball team dominate All-District selections. Carlenya Veasley is Newcomer of the Year. Making the First Team are Karen Riley, Angelia Stevenson, Susan Griffith, and Jennifer Dorsett. Named to the Second Team were Erica Castleberry, Courtney Riley, and Nikki Hill. Coach Donna Clark is named Coach of the Year.

35 YEARS AGO

• Carolyn Franks is the recipient of Texas Opera Theater’s “Bravo” award for her work with the group.

• Richard Taylor wins the third-place medal at the state track and field meet. He threw the discus 161 feet, 2 inches. Julie Kilburn finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run.

• Mark Rountree receives a bachelor of Business administration degree from Baylor University.

45 YEARS AGO

• Top three honor students at Pittsburg High School are announced. They are Liz Porter, valedictorian; Sheila Kisner, salutatorian; and Kathy Florey, third-ranking student.

• Janice Hodge, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. D.R. Hodge, is honored with the title of Junior Miss Mount Pleasant.

• Cindy Burnham wins fifth place in the 22nd annual Lenox Creative Table Setting contest.
