Community invited to shower local girl with love after tragic accident

On June 13, a tragic accident occurred in Wood County, seriously injuring McKenzie Burns, 19, of Pittsburg. According to reports from DPS officers who responded to the scene, Burns was ejected from the vehicle upon impact.

Burns is the daughter of God’s Closet/Camp County Cares Director Alethea Smerdon. Smerdon said that Burns suffered a concussion, a broken hip, fractures in her spine, and the loss of her biological mother, who was in the vehicle when the crash occurred.

Since the accident, Burns has undergone a great amount of medical treatment. Her head has been stapled and her hip has been surgically rebuilt. She was released from the hospital on Monday. Though she is home, she will have a long road to recovery.

“McKenzie is having extreme separation anxiety and constant pain. Everything will be okay, but for the moment, it isn’t. Your prayers for my daughter McKenzie’s healing would be greatly appreciated. I’m in tears and know it will get better. We all thank God she is alive and will be able to walk,” said Smerdon.

Local resident Christine Jackson has now made it her mission to improve Burns’s morale during the healing process. She is organizing a card shower for Burns so that the community may share well wishes and encouragement.

“Let’s shower her with love, encouragement, and wishes for a speedy and full recovery,” said Jackson. “Thank you in advance for loving on this beautiful young lady who loves on so many through the ministry of God’s Closet!”
