In consequence of an area near the school that refuses to drain properly, the Commissioners Court in regular meeting on Jan. 26 agreed to blade the ditch that directs excess water to the city pond in order to help drain the area. Commissioner French noted that, as the county is able to assist the school, it saves money and therefore everyone benefits, including the taxpayer.
Several little princesses were delightfully entertained during a Fairy Dust Princess Ball on Jan. 29. Disney princesses came and visited them at the Civic Center in Mount Pleasant, pouring “tea” (apple juice) and offering the little ladies cookies and an opportunity to dance with a Disney princess.
At 1898 request of firm mining coal in Pittsburg, philanthropist Andrew Carnegie gave $5,000 to match local pledges and build the first Carnegie library (of 31) in Texas on this site. The masonry building was also the Opera House and City Hall. Library had 3,000 books. It became a social center, with meeting rooms for clubs and groups such as ladies sewing for World War I hospitals. The Opera House staged professional drama and lectures and was used for graduations and recitals until modern school was built in 1926. The library burned in 1939. –Historical Marker
The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College is pleased to announce that it will kick off its 2022 events calendar on Sunday, February 13 at 2:30 p.m. with a piano concert by NTCC President Dr. Ron Clinton. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for ages 17-and-under. Virtual live-streaming tickets are also available for $10. All proceeds from the concert will directly benefit the NTCC Eagle Food Pantry, which provides much-needed food and other services to NTCC students.
