Firefighters battle local blaze, elements
Mar. 18 was a bit windy, and a breeze coupled with rather dry spring weather encouraged a fire to get out of control and spread quickly over several acres in a nearby field. The fire department was still fighting both the breeze and the flames when they arrived; they would put out a flame only to have it re-ignite as a result of the wind and smoldering grass. Driving quickly over the hot, blackened soil, they managed to get the conflagration under control without any loss of GAZETTE PHOTO / ELIZABETH LANNING
