COVID-19 cases increase in Camp County

After seeing only six positive cases of COVID-19 in Camp County from April 16 to May 2, the case count has now doubled in the last 12 days. This morning, County Judge A.J. Mason announced a twelfth case in the county, stating, “Dr. MacBeath, our Local Health Authority (LHA) and a full staff of medical professionals work closely with DSHS to obtain further information… This brings our current numbers in Camp County to 12 total cases with 6 recovered. I ask you to please continue to social distance and adhere to hygiene recommendations. Thank you for all you have done to this point.”

Mason also expressed his appreciation for local residents, businesses, organizations, and churches continuing to “do their part in an outstanding way,” but urged citizens of the county not to become complacent.

In neighboring Titus County, positive cases have increased rapidly, reaching 79 as of last night. Mount Pleasant Mayor Tracy Craig stated, “The only way to slow the growth in numbers is by practicing social distancing and keeping our families safe. Although wearing a mask is uncomfortable, it can make a difference. We do not want to be the next hotspot, but if we do not do better about how we confront this Pandemic we are headed in that direction.” The city also saw its first COVID-19 related death this week.

Other adjacent counties are seeing much slower growth in cases. Morris County currently contains nine cases and Upshur County has 17. Wood County has seen 15 cases; Franklin County holds three. Citizens should not panic but remain vigilant and dedicated to reducing the spread, following the advice of state and local officials. DSHS strongly encourages social distancing and good hygiene as the state continues to reopen.
