Oil leak at Lone Star Lake

On March 13, the City of Lone Star was made aware of an oil spill that occurred in Lone Star Lake at Ellison Creek Reservoir.

Morris County Judge Doug Reeder announced on March 16, “The Railroad Commission has determined that the source of the unauthorized release originated from a reserve pit located at a well site on U.S. Steel property.”

According to officials, there is no ongoing leak. Emergency services immediately responded to clean up the spill and game wardens inspected the lake to retrieve water and soil samples. As of March 16, the investigation is ongoing.

The public is advised that some areas may still pose a risk and to proceed with caution until further notice. Citizens who observe affected shoreline areas or who have information that may assist investigators are encouraged to contact the Morris County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 903-645-2232.
