• Pittsburg Pirates baseball team won Saturday over Frisco’s Wakeland Wolverines to advance to Region II finals.
• The top two honor students at Pittsburg Junior High are Monica Tran and Jordan Hamilton.
• Over 150 Pittsburg High School seniors participated in commencement ceremonies Friday at Pirate Stadium.
• Police Chief Martin Pessink has resigned. Mr. Pessink has been Pittsburg’s police chief since June 2002.
• Jaz Grant is congratulated by Pittsburg High School Principal Jim Richardson. Jaz was named a finalist in
• the student of the year campaign.

• Shelli Schubert, Angela Bratton, and Ali Garrison compete in State track meet. Schubert placed eighth in the 3,200-meter run. Bratton was seventh in the 200-meter dash, and Garrison was seventh in the triple jump.
• Pittsburg Independent students in grades three through eight show dramatic improvements in the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills test.

• Ground breaking ceremony is held at the site of the city’s $2.2 million wastewater treatment plant off Farm-to-Market Road 557.
• Dr. Bob Stinson is new Lions Club president.
• Stephen Parker is chosen outstanding musician in the Pirate Band. Jill Henderson is named best bandsman.
• First State Bank employees honor Edward Russell on his 35th anniversary with the bank.

• Graduation is held for Pittsburg High School students. Alicia Avent gave the valedictorian address and Dawnette Moody spoke as the salutatorian. Vandals cause extensive damage in a rash of incidents.
— 50 YEARS AGO —
• Clark brothers grocery store closes. The store was founded in 1898.
• Strawberry preserves are 39 cents for an 18 ounce tumbler, and Bonnie Baker shortening is 59 cents for a 3-gallon can. Both items can be found at the Piggly Wiggly.

• Fruit crop outlook dims in East Texas.
• Alice Winkle is elected to office at Texas Woman’s University in Denton.
• Ruth Covin is presented pin as treasurer of Association of Childhood Education at North Texas State in Denton.
• Frederick Douglass High School commencement exercises are Sunday.

• C.L. Turner is elected cashier of the First National Bank, succeeding the deceased T.E. Russell.
• Seven pupils graduate from school.

• The county has enough money in the treasury to pay off all indebtedness and have $2,000 left.
• A mass meting is held at the opera house to discuss means of providing an additional school building.
• The following names are added to the school faculty: Rosa Bass, Ethel Knowles, and Clara Buckingham.
