4-H Summer Fun

News from your Extension Agent

Don’t be fooled! Camp County 4-H is more fun than riding a wild bull, and sometimes, you even get to

do that in 4-H.

This summer the Camp County 4-H Youth Organization will host several free programs for youth who are interested in getting to know more about 4-H. The first two will be single sessions on

photography and robotics. The third program, Camp County 4-H Jr. “AgVocates,” will be a 4-part series.

The outdoor photography program will be held on June 25, from 10 am-12 pm. Youth will meet in the Camp County courtroom for a short educational session before heading out on the main street in town to take photos of the architecture, nature and of themselves. A few adult volunteers are needed to insure the group stays safe and together.

Junk Drawer Robotics Session 1 will be held July 31, 10 a.m. to noon at the Aubrey Pilgrim Building.

This program is one session of potentially more in the future. If this one goes well and has interest, we will add more session dates. Youth will work in teams to build the robot using everyday materials. At the end of building and testing, a competition will be held to see whose robot can perform the task.

Camp County 4-H Jr. “AgVocates” is something I am very proud of. As our youth in the livestock industry get older, they will meet people who may not be as familiar with raising livestock or living on a farm. This 4-session program will touch on basic animal health, animal by-products, farm safety and “AgVocating” for the livestock industry. Portions of two AgriLife Extension

curriculums will be included: Path to the Plate and Quality Counts. This program is geared toward youth with livestock interests and those who attend are required to sign up for at least three sessions. At the end of the program, certificates of completion will be given out for those who qualify.

Jr. AgVocates will be held on Fridays: July 13, July 20, July 27 and August 3 with a tentative time is 10 am. Pre-registration is required due to tentative scheduling and contact information is necessary to update in the event of a change. Participants will meet at the Aubrey Pilgrim building. During at least one of the sessions, participants will carpool to local agri-businesses for a tour of the facilities to learn about what they do. Detailed information and scheduling will be sent to those who pre-register.

The Camp County 4-H/ youth agriculture coalition and adult volunteers have worked hard to plan these events and hope to have a lot participation. Pre-registration is required one week prior to the start of each program. To pre-register, call the Extension office at 903-856-5005 or email kaycee.davis@ag.amu.edu.

All data and recommendations are based on Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Resources.

Youth who are active in 4-H are four times more likely to give back to their communities, two times more likely to make healthier choices, and twice as likely to participate in STEM activities.

4-H grows true leaders, using uses hands-on learning and creating positive youth development in an informal classroom setting.

Youth who are in 4-H are more likely to have a successful college experience, have advanced public speaking skills, as well as life skills that help them to succeed away from home. There are even college education scholarship opportunities for youth involved in 4-H.
