Kathryn Elaine Smith

Kathryn Elaine Smith was born September 1.1992 in Mt Pleasant Texas. At the age of 33 she left our presence on September 25, 2025, in New York City after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her parents, Dennis and Melinda Smith of Pittsburg, Texas and her grandmother, Frances Weatherbee of Childress Texas. She is also survived by her aunt and uncle, Kathy and Greg Pickering of Lake Jackson, Texas and cousins Michael and Noelle Pickering of Georgetown, Texas and Jeff and Chelsea Pickering of Arlington, Virginia.

Kathryn grew up in Pittsburg participating in many school activities ,4-H and dance. She was drum major for the PHS band and graduated as the 2011 Salutatorian. She enjoyed showing chickens, goats, hogs and horses during her 4-H career. Dance was part of her life as she took classes and assisted at The Dance Company in Mt Pleasant. After high school she attended Texas A & M University earning her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with certificates in Equine Science and Meat Science in 2015. One of the highlights of her time there was being in the class that planned the first Return to the Remuda horse sale. Kathryn then moved onto Las Cruces, New Mexico beginning her graduate studies at New Mexico State University. She completed her Master of Science in 2017 and continued with further studies for her PhD. While in graduate school she had the opportunity to travel across the United States and traveled to Malawi in Africa to work with dairy farmers. She presented numerous abstracts and proceedings and served as the Graduate Student Director for the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science. In June of 2023 she accepted a position with MicroBios in Ithaca, New York as lab manager. While there she was instrumental in developing their feed assay techniques and served as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors litigation committee.

Kathryn loved helping others learn and spent many hours studying and finding different techniques to help students learn. She loved traveling, trying different cuisines and cooking. Every holiday came with a list of new recipes that she wanted to try. She loved her pets and her horses. Her family was very important to her.

A memorial service for Kathryn will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 beginning at 11:00 a.m at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Texas In lieu of flowers memorials for a scholarship can be made to the Camp County A&M Club at Cypress Bank or to the charity of your choice.
