PISD holds groundbreaking ceremony for Bond Projects
Pittsburg Independent School District hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, March 31 at the Pittsburg High School Pirate Stadium. The groundbreaking was held to initiate the construction of the 2024 Bond Projects that were voted on by the community in the election in May of last year. These projects include building a new cafeteria and wing at the junior high school, a new bus route, and a new high school campus.
Many Pittsburg students were asked to participate in the ceremony. The indication was given by senior Connor Gilbert. The High School Student Council and Junior High Student Council led the American and Texas pledges, respectively. Lastly, a member of the Pittsburg High School Band, Naythen Contreras, performed the National Anthem on trumpet.
Superintendent Terry Waldrep welcomed everyone to the event, stating, “Thank you for this momentous occasion. This is a big occasion for our district, our city, our community, and most of all, our students.” Waldrep states, “These projects are for our students and it’s an investment in the future of our schools.”
“Today we’re here not just to break ground, but our hope is that we’re laying a foundation for years to come. We hope that we’re laying a foundation for a brighter future for Pittsburg ISD and our community.”
Waldrep gave a special thanks to the many people who made this event possible. He introduced members of the school board: President, Dr. Greg Miller; Vice President, Christian Yantis; Secretary, Bryan Berry; Lawrence Cleveland; Mario Willis; Linsey Harwell; and Vernon Rowe.
He also thanked the members of the facilities planning committee and members of the bond oversight committee. Waldrep recognized BWA architects and the lead architect, Jeff Ball. He thanked Compass Builders Inc. and their President Charlie Price. Jackson Construction was also recognized by Superintendent Waldrep.
“But you know what, a big thanks, a big big thanks, goes to our teachers and our staff, our community members, [and] the parents. I want to thank you for your unwavering support,” Waldrep states.
The School Board President, Dr. Greg Miller also spoke at the ceremony. Miller shares, “With the overwhelming support of our community and the passage of a 90 plus million dollar bond, we’re breaking ground on what’s going to be the cornerstone of opportunity for generations to come.”
“This new high school is going to be more than just bricks and mortar. It’s going to be a place where students can dream big, our teachers continue to inspire, and our entire community can take pride.”
