Camp Habitat helping Vets

Thanks to donations made during East Texas Giving Day in April, two local veterans are receiving much-needed repairs and upgrades to their homes.

Camp County Habitat for Humanity signed up to take part in the special East Texas-wide fundraiser to help boost its funding for its Veterans Project. This was the second year the organization has taken part in the giving day and its investment paid off with the charity receiving $2,500 in donations, which qualified them for matching funds from the East Texas Communities Foundation.

“It did put us over the $10,000 we needed to get started on the veterans’ houses,” said Executive Director Linda Baxter. “Our volunteers had already gotten the heating and air conditioning unit donated and installed on one of the houses, and the roofer is supposed to start this week. On Saturday, our volunteers will start to tear off and replace the porch and install a ramp for our second veteran.”

Once the roofing projects are completed, the volunteers will be able to begin the other planned projects, such as painting, shoring up an entryway, and replacing wet sheet rock.

Camp Habitat Board President Mike Laing said both men the project is helping are Vietnam veterans.

“When we did research for this, we found a lot of programs for the younger veterans, but not the older vets, which is why we had to raise the money ourselves and why the American Legion helped us out a lot,” Laing said.

“The community and businesses around here really do step up,” Baxter said.

Anyone interested in helping with the project on Saturday should call Baxter at 903-767-2306.
