Mitchell

God plucked a flower, a beautiful flower, a dutiful flower, a kind flower and mostly a sweet flower from His earthly flower garden. This flower was named Robbie Jewel Allen Mitchell, who was called to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 8.

On a cold December evening, Elgie and Orenza Allen were graced with a beautiful baby girl. Their life would never be the same because on this day, Dec. 29, 1930, Robbie Jewel, their second child would be born. Little did they know that this girl would grow up to be the epitome of a lady!

Robbie grew up in a loving household with her oldest sister Dorothy Jones (Don), Arthurlene Gilliam (Cleon), loving brother A.D. Allen, and her baby sister Ona Jean Tate. Love was abounded in this family with loving and caring grandparents and sweet aunts and uncles and many cousins. As a resident of Center Point Community, at an early age, she joined Center Point Baptist Church where she was a faithful member.

At the age of 13, Robbie’s parents made the huge decision to send her to Denver, CO to live with Aunt Ona Jane and Uncle George Walker to experience different educational opportunities. It was quite a new undertaking, being that she experienced an integrated school in the forties. She graduated from Emanuel Training High School in 1947.

Next stop, Prairie View A & M College, where she would major and graduate in Home Economics. Not only did she find a degree there, but she found the love of her life, Hubert Lee Mitchell, Jr. The couple would wed in February, 1950. Four years later, on Oct. 2, she would give birth to a son Roderick L. Mitchell, M.D. He was the light of their lives. They all would attend Mt. Mitchell Church of Christ as a family. She was a member there until her demise.

Robbie would wear many hats in her life; she was employed by the Texas Extension Agency as a Home Demonstration Agent; in 1965 she was hired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a housing and farm Loan Specialist in which she was the first African American female to hold a position of this magnitude. She worked proudly and helped so many families in the Morris and Cass Counties area to own homes and farms. She made it possible for these families to live in comfort; that was her diligent task. She retired from being a Loan Specialist, that she cared for so much, at 41 years, 7 months, 3 days in 1994.

Robbie was affiliated with the Women’s Professional Club of Linden, TX. She loved her neighborhood and neighbors and they loved her back. She had many children that were children of another mother. Linda Rhymes was her daughter from another mother, who was sent by god to her and they had a bond that was loving and unbreakable.

She was married to H.L. Mitchell, Jr. for 59 years until his demise in 2009.

Leaving to celebrate her life; her son, Roderick Mitchell, M.D. (Barbara), her family, friends and loved ones.
